When Will it End: Reflections on the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde Texas

Image
Why? That is the question on so many minds right now…why? Why would Salvador Ramos, an 18-year-old man, barely a child himself, walk into an elementary school with a gun, and open fire. In the aftermath, fourteen young lives, including the shooter, and a teacher have lost their lives. Gone…in yet another senseless mass shooting. I remember the shootings at Columbine High School, which seemed the origin of the concept of school, shootings. I remember Sandy Hook Elementary, the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, and Virginia Tech. And most recently the shooting in Buffalo New York just a short time ago. We remember the countless other shootings that have occurred in between those events…all tragic, all senseless. Greed, power, revenge, escape, these are all reasons many consider the mind of an individual can go to such an extreme place. But it seems impossible for an individual to think, in however a manic state they may be in, that the only way out is to rush into an establishment, any e...

And just like that...I'm back in it!

Image
Greetings! It is great to be back here...a-ranting and a-raving like the good old days. Ah the good old days...when we could walk the streets without facial coverings, interact with friends and family with a hug and/or a kiss, and enjoy some "adult time" with a close friend...new or old.  But  those days seem to be far back in our rear view mirror.  Please, if you haven't done so already, GET VACCINATED ! It doesn't only protect you from the COVID-19 virus, it helps you to protect others as well. Be the example to those you care about who are apprehensive. I can tell you, the virus is a much better alternative to what this virus can do to you.  And as always, my sincerest thanks for checking back in with us. You can look forward to more consistent postings, and some other options to get the word from me as I continue my journey being Fabat50 and beyond.  So let us begin... First, a thank you. Over the last year, life has changed for many of us. No matter ...

Where in the World did our World Go?

Image
So here we are half the way through another Black History month, and yet another unsatisfactory impeachment trial in the rear view. I have some thoughts on that for another post, so stay tuned. In the meantime, this is something that I leave you, the gentle reader, to ponder. At the core of this missive, is a more moral question; do you think live in a country blighted by racism or is it all media generated noise? lease be sure to share your comments...I look forward to reading them. Before I dive in, a brief disclaimer; the info I am sharing with you is taken directly from a popular gay social media site. It has in no way been altered, or modified, other than to fit the confines of the illustration used to direct attention to what is the heart of this issue. To define “who is who” within the conversation, my responses are in orange, the messages of the other individual involved are in white: just as they appeared in the original message stream. With that said......

How is a "Social Butterfly" Survives the COVID-19 Isolation? Reconnecting!

Image
Diabolical COVID-19!! We are living in interesting times to say the least. We are seemingly “under siege” by a virus that seems to take no consideration for race, creed, socio-economic position, or any of the other factors with which we consider with others regularly. It feels strange that the best line of defense against this is isolation. For me, isolation can be a challenging thing. Even though I am an only child who enjoys my time alone, this feels different because it’s a strongly recommended practice. For those who know me, I think one of the adjectives you might hear most is that I am a social being. Not quite to the extent I have been in the past, but I draw energy from those around me. With little to no new energy in my space, I feel a bit stagnant. But I am finding ways to cope…one of which and I am surprised to even hear myself say this, is the social media outlets. I know, I have said in the past that so much of this behemoth in our world wasn’t always a great thi...

A Boy education, a Man's Passivity, and a Gentleman's Agreement

The FREAKING Oscars!! Anyone who has known me for a long time knows that I absolutely LOVE Oscars day! Those party’s back in the day…ahh memories. There’s one thing I have grown to love almost as much; Turner Classic Movies. Each year, the month of February they host a “31 Days of Oscar” festival, featuring award winning movies from years past. It’s still going on through the beginning of March, so you can still catch some great films. On this day, even as I write this post, I’m enjoying a true classic, “Gentlemen’s Agreement.” From 1947, it’s the story of a journalist Philip Green who goes “undercover” to write an expose on the rampant anti-Semitism that runs rampant throughout post-war New Your City and the train set, affluent enclaves of New Canaan and Darien Connecticut. It’s a fascinating character study that makes one take a serious look at their own prejudices. A 1947 Classic! President John F. Kennedy used a quote in several speeches that came to mind when I sta...

Don't Fear the Reaper...or Should You

Image
Do you feel the disconnect? Do you ever feel a disconnect between yourself and the rest of the world? I mean like, you feel like the rest of the populous is privy to the punchline of the funniest joke ever, but not only have you been unable to discern it for yourself, no one is offering any assistance to help either. Now don’t misunderstand, this is not a gnashing of teeth, railing at God, “why me” kind of thing. For me it’s a bit more complex. Gonna try to explain in this missive, so please stick with e if you can. I guess to make sense, I must start at the beginning. This past week I was rocked by the death of not one, not two, but three individuals that had at one time or another been a more regular part of my life. I have had to concluded that at this stage of the game, I should be more prepared for death. Yet a part of me feels as if I should rail against it, rather than add it to greeting card rotation for birthdays and holidays. But how do you attempt to accept som...

The New Normal...oh how I hate that phrase. Part II

Image
Well hey there! Welcome back! Thanks for taking a trip back here, I hope you will be glad you did. So, I guess we will pick up where we left off. So, if you’re comfy, and ready…off we go on my visit to the land known as… The New Normal. First, a little disclaimer. While this post, and my previous post as well, may seem a little more history lesson than substance, I can assure you, it is all relatable to the times in which we now live. This post will paint a picture that will almost parallel our current political climate, and how our world is more race-centric than ever before. So, with that said… Logo of the NAACP When last we were together, we ended with a tease about how the Democratic Primary affected one of this country’s longest standing civil rights organizations. I am speaking of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Founded in New York City in 1909, the forefront of the civil rights movement was started as an interracial organ...
