Ah 50...has it really been that fabulous?

Image
The face of almost 51! So the big “5-1” is cresting the horizon about now. It gives me cause to look back and reflect and determine if being 50 has been as “fab” as the moniker of this blog would have one believe. It is a very often asked question…kind of. More on that later…but the big question is this; is being 50 really all that fab? Well, I have an answer for you darlings… You bet your sweet ass it is! As many who know me are aware, aging hasn’t ever really been that big a deal for me. “Age is just a number.” “With age comes wisdom.” “Aging ain’t no big thing!” I’ve heard them all…believe me. And platitudes aside, I am reminded every day that I am blessed for the genetics I was gifted at birth. Aside from the few creaks from my joints that greet me occasionally in the morning, I have been very, very fortunate. Aging has truly been a gift…and not just from the physical perspective. Being 50 has been like gaining admission to a very exclusive club, ...

Fab 50: Been there, done that and bought the t-shirt (almost)

Greetings fans a well wishers! I hope this new year of 2017 is treating you well. Now that the "Fab 50" milestone has been reached, I decided that I would continue this blog as a way to share random thoughts, musings, pet-peeves and deep thoughts. I hope you will come back often, as the content will change frequently. So, with that said, let's get ready to rumble! First, some housekeeping. The original purpose of this blog was to track my progress in losing weight and making some positive life changes ahead of my milestone birthday this past December. We, I am pleased to share with you my final results; I lost a total of about 52 pounds! Approximately, you may ask? Well, like a number of other people on the planet, I wasn't as strict with my food intake as I had been over the holiday season. Oh sure, Thanksgiving came, and went without as much as a ripple on the pond. But then came that treat filled of all the major holidays, Christmas! My vice...sweets! And Chris...

Hello, yeah it's been a while. Oh not much, how about you?

Greetings all! If you recognize the song the title of this blog is from, drop me a private note, and I will send you something fun in a reply. Now...read on! Well, after another long hiatus, I am back in the blogosphere. I first want to say thank you to all of you who have been inquiring when this day would happen; it is appreciated. It has been a challenge getting back to this point, and the expression of concern and support has not only been overwhelming, but incredibly helpful as well. If you chose to read on, it will become a bit clearer why… When I started this blog back in November, I did so with the highest expectations…in myself. I have always tried to be “that guy;” the one you can rely on above all others. But over the last few months, “that guy” has been replace with “this guy;” unsure, unsteady, and not at all on his game. I have had brief periods like this in my life before, but not one that has lasted as long as this. It all seemed to have started just after th...

Greeting! Well I can only assume that many of you have forgotten about my quest for a more “fab” me at 50, but for those of you who haven’t…I’m back baby! I appreciate the expressions of concern for my lack of posting, but this new year has not been without its challenges. But as I type this, I can assure you that things are on the up for this guy, which I will elaborate a bit more later in this post. For now, I want to address some of the concerns expressed by folks after my lack of posting. Within the first weeks of this new year, I lost 3 very dear people in my life; two of them to suicide. Now, this is not going to be a tirade about suicide, or how losses make us stronger, or anything like that. It is just a statement of fact, and the facts are this; these three individuals are no longer on this plane with us. I am not going to share details on all of these individuals, and their importance in my life. That part is personal, just for me to know and cherish. Am I sad? T...

I'm back...and no, not from outer space!

First, thanks to those of you who inquired about me and my blog…it means a lot. When I started this journey, I was sincere…and I still am. Still, the best paid plans…sometimes life gets in the way. So know that I appreciate your concern. With that said… Ever have one of those days when you just feel like something is weighing you down? That sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you just have to turn it over to a higher power? Well, that’s been my state lately. Doing my best to shake it, and I believe I am winning. Check out this video...this song has definitely helped too! Still, as I said before, life can really get in the way sometimes. November is a tough month. Aside from the definitive change of the seasons, there has been a great deal of loss in November’s past. Palpable losses that even though time moves on, you sometimes feel that you can’t. Add to that my insane decision to start this journey at the beginning of one of the most food-fueled times of the year! As I s...

Prières pour Paris; صلاة لباريس, and prayers for the bullies of the world!

Hearts go out to Paris and Beirut Wow! To call this a week would be a gross understatement. Everything I am doing, these changes in my way of living, seem so minimal in light of the tragedies that occurred in Paris and Beirut. It seems so senseless and puts a lot of things in perspective. To those effected directly by these tragedies, and those of us peering through the windows at the sadness, my heart, and the hearts of many other go out to you. Be strong, and those intent on instilling fear and terror under the misguided name of religion will not win. With that said… It was all in all a great week! I had a doctor’s appointment, where the news was not only good, it was great! Cholesterol, both the good and the bad, at great levels, blood pressure was at an all-time low during an appointment, and the best part…my weight was down 10 pounds since my last visit! Now that said, my last visit was about 3 months ago, so that’s not saying a lot, but I will take the praise where I can...

Fear and Loathing in Colorado...

Well, November 2 nd and I am already facing some concerns about this journey even before I have truly begun. “Do I have it in me to do what it takes to reach my goals? “Am I being a selfish prick for wanting to look better?” “Are people going to laugh and ridicule me?” “Am I just too damned old to be concerned about this? I’ve never really been fearful of much in this life; not including heights, spiders, snakes, standing in water in shoes (long story), rollercoasters (which I am so over now) and the like. Fear was rarely in my vocabulary. And yet this new adventure is scaring the pants off me! Why? Portrait of a crier.. and no it's not me! :) I guess the biggest fear is failure. No one likes to fail, and I am no exception. But failure is always the potential outcome when embarking on something new. Failure doesn’t usually scare me, but in this instance it does. I think that’s one of the reasons why I chose to be somewhat public about this journey. I am a v...
